Controversial Post Alert... I Just Don't 'Get' Lush

I think I may be the one dissenting voice in blogger-land, but try as hard as I like, I just don't 'get' Lush...  I'm always popping in there to see if there are any bits and pieces that tempt me, but I usually leave empty handed.  I'm never sure what to buy or how to shop there.  I have tried, including recommendations from other bloggers, but I just don't 'get' this brand.

In the past decade or so, my Lush purchases and gifts I have received have been the following:

1 bath bomb that got damp before I could use it (but smelled lovely)
1 bath bomb that covered my bath in glitter and left what looked like a dead butterfly floating in my tub (it was a fabric one, but I did get a shock)
1 massage bar (I do quite like this one)
1 packet of Rockstar soap (that I'm using to fragrance my lingerie drawer - I'm not overly keen on the smell)
1 very large bottle of Snow Fairy shower gel - I asked for this for Christmas after reading all the great reviews from other bloggers and thought this would be a good intro into Lush - to me, it smells absolutely disgusting - like medicine!

Maybe it's because I'm not into really sweet smelling beauty products, maybe it's because taking a bath is a very rare occurrance for me (I do shower, don't worry), maybe it's because so many of their products are messy and cluttery or maybe it's because when I was a teenager Lush didn't exist - it was the Body Shop all the way for inexpensive beauty products in my formative years.  I'm not sure why, but nothing from Lush is really rocking my world.  My job involves me visiting town centres all over the south of England and whenever I spot a Lush, I do pop in to see if there's anything to tempt me - there rarely is.

So ladies, what am I missing out on?  Please help me - am I ever going to find anything in Lush that I actually like?!  Given I don't take baths and I get through about 2 bars of soap a year (and have about 20 in my beauty storage), please let me know what you think I should take a look at.  I could really do with some suggestions, as I'm determined to finally 'get' what all the hype is about!

Thanks in advance for your help! xx

I don't like strong smelly things so there are only a few products that I like from LUSH. The comforter is one, not too strongly smelling and the one I have just reviewed is the soild shampoo - my latest blogpost! x

I totally understand you point. I don't get Soap & Glory myself. :)

There's so much more to Lush thank the pink stinky bits. Try the amazing Big Blue bath ballistic (but put it in a stocking first!) or all of teh massage bars packed with essential oils... Grass shower gel is nice but the whole Dirty range is AMAZING!

The skincare stuff is pretty great too... fresh face masks are wonderful as are some of the cleansers.

I go through love hate periods with the pink stuff... when I was pregnant it was actually my craving... I was obsessed. Then as soon as baby was born I gave it away as I had to have it all out of the house!

I tried Snow Fairy last year and I loved it, but that's only because I like really sweet, bubblegum like smells. And glitter as well. My brother smelled it once and ummm, let's say he didn't like it.
We don't have lush here (a friend sent the Snow Fairy) , so I can't help you with any suggestions, but I've heard some good words about their body powder, lip scrubs and lip tints.

@ Charlie - thanks for that recommendation - sounds good! x

@Alex - I have to say I'm a bit meh about Soap and Glory too. I'm always buying it for other people, but I've only ever tried a lipgloss from them myself! x

@Charlie - thanks for the suggestions. I'll look for the Dirty range and the skincar next time I'm in Lush... I just find the pink glittery stuff gets in the way! x

@Claire - I could manage a lip scrub - I'll keep my eyes peeled next time I'm in there! x

@Ria - Snow Fairy sounds to be a bit like marmite - you either love it or hate it! Mr TBBB didn't like it either! x

Try a few of their shower products, or maybe body creams etc. You can ask them for samples to save you buying a big tub full and wasting money

I can definately see where you're coming from, i very rarely buy anything from there purely because it's overpriced and overrated. the only good thing i've had from lush is I love juicy shampoo, and even that is a bit of a rip off xx

I've never really bought anything from them as I always think the smell is foul when I've walked past it before, but I desperately want to try snow fairy! xx

I'll ditto what Jade wrote. "Overpriced and overrated" - spot on. The sales assistants are like vultures circling and diving on customers. Where as i like to browse and take my time, they put the pressure on. I prefer The Body Shop but it's not what it used to be (i'm showing my age here). It used to be pretty cheap with a lot more choice. Now it's trying to convince us it's more up market with the layout and design yet the products are the same quality. I think it's since L'Oréal bought it?

I love Lush, but none of the things you've tried!
The fresh masks are great, and I usually get 5 applications out of a tub so not too dear either. Ocean Salt is too harsh for my face but great elsewhere. Almost all my skincare comes from there, actually!

Bristol Lush is also generous about samples so you could always ask for a couple of bits.

@Jess - I'll try to get some samples, sounds like a good idea!

@Jade - I do find them quite expensive, but Juicy shampoo sounds nice!

@Krystyna - I know, the smell is very overpowering - you can smell the shop a mile off!

@Annette - I agree about the Body Shop. I rarely go in there now (and have just discovered their fab brushes), but I used to buy loads in there when I was growing up

@Sally - so the facemasks are one to try then! I'll see if I can get some samples as well!

Thanks for all your comments and help! x

Love Lush but not,ost of the products you have listed. I hate sweet smelling products. Try some of the soaps... Fave is Demon in the Dark which is minty and Karma, which is citrusy. Also love the new shower gel... Think it's called Dirty. Olive Branch is great too. Love the moisturizers and facial products. The best thing about Lush is the 'natural' aspect of it. Also love Melvita now too... Similar idea... Good luck!

I've always been put off Lush because of how strong the smell at the store in my hometown (Chester) was. You still (10 years on!) can't walk past there without almost choking from all the different smells! I've been to the one in Bristol which is better, but its never somewhere I *have* to go to - in all the time I've lived near a Lush, I've only bought 3 bath bombs!

This store use to be in an arcade I use to visit quite often. But the minute you entered, you'd smell Lush, which if I am honest, stunk out the whole arcade!! I went in once and had to run out as the scent was just too much for my nostrils (and head) - as a result, didn't purchase anything. This Snow Fairy however I have seen a lot of people rave on about it, but I've not tried it myself. As for products to try, I'm a sort of 'Lush newbie' so cnt really help but saying that I have just purchased a fair few bits online from the christmas sale which I am very excited to try and review very soon, and it will be a decider -whether to buy or not to buy again from Lush in the future!!.......

Now I do like sweet scents so I like things like Snow Fairy, and I feel a bit boring in a bath with nothing in it so I like some of their bathbombs too. But some people seem to view Lush as the Holy Grail and I have to admit, anything that I've tried from there that isn't my usual shower gel/bathbomb/lipbalm stuff has been a tad disappointing.

So I like going into Lush every now and again for a few treats but if I could never go there again, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

My favs are - Ocean Salt, Rose Jam Bubbleroon, Magic Wand (only available at Xmas), Turkish Delight shower smoothie. You should ask for some samples next time you are in x

Well I don't do baths either and I think Snow Fairy stinks! I do love Ocean Salt, the fresh mud masks, and some of the charcoal products they sell.

I don't see the point of Bath bombs and their body lotions are a bit meh!

What I do like about them though is that they are always changing the ranges around so I always find something.

I have the same problem as you with The Body Shop. No matter how many times I go in there nothing inspires me apart from their scrubby gloves.
